We build towards a working understanding of the intelligence AI seeks to construct. Taking inspiration from the mechanization of computers (formerly a human occupation) and from the inclusive spectrum of animal intelligence, we argue there has always existed an honest, useful, and humble definition of intelligence that we can reveal by stripping away our unhelpful human exceptionalism.
